The School Newspaper

After the formation of Student Council, we asked the students if they would want to start a newspaper.  Before the words reached their ears, they already had decided that this is what they wanted to do.

In years past, school newspapers were typed on a sheet of paper and duplicated on a spirit duplicator or a mimeograph machine.  Neither of these is familiar to our students today, since computers have elevated school newspapers to a level of sophistication that rivals professional productions.

Of course, for this to happen, we need to have professional people guide their efforts.  To this end, Mrs. Tina Braman, Librarian at Archbishop Hoban High School and one of our parent volunteers, has agreed to be the faculty adviser to the paper.  The students will compile the stories, meet with Mrs. Braman at a later date, and, with her help, construct the paper in our computer lab on a program designed for that purpose.  After the paper is published, they will distribute it throughout the school and parish for everyone to read.  This will be a morale booster for our students, especially when they see their names on articles they wrote or their names in print.

Mrs. Braman has been involved with school newspapers, yearbooks and publications for several years.  Her expertise is legion throughout the area and her willingness to donate after-school time is a source of genuine appreciation from the school administration as well as the students.

There has been an overwhelming excitement from the students as they approach their new roles of having a voice through Student Council and now the school newspaper.  We are pleased to see this and are making every effort to offer them direction so they focus on responsible reporting and adhere to the cherished value of Christian Charity.

Although no stories are written in the paper yet, there will undoubtedly be a great deal of news from our students.  They will enjoy having a vehicle to cast their thoughts beyond the school and to see their efforts enjoyed be our parish community..

Until next week,  God's blessings.
